So... this might sound a little silly, but I have a thing about doctors calling me by my first name. I wouldn't mind if they introduced themselves by their first names, but invariably the introduction goes something like, "Hello Ginny, I'm Dr. Johnson". It really winds me up (yeah, I know, I choose to be wound up, but still) - that is how you address children or subordinates (which, I even hate the word subordinate) - not patients.

So today I had an appointment with a new doctor, and I thought, rather than let this irritate me, I will just tell him that it annoys me. By LOA of course, if you think about what you DON'T want, you're sure to get it - so I just concentrated on the conversation, and that I would express myself calmly and respectfully, saying something like, "I'm very happy for you to call me by my first name if I may use your first name, but otherwise please call me Mrs. Smith"

And to my complete surprise, I didn't even have to have the conversation - he started off by saying, "Mrs. Smith? I'm Andrew Johnson." And he was completely respectful and helpful throughout the appointment.

That has never happened to me before. All my adult life (nearly 30 years now) it has annoyed me, the disparity of being called by my first name by doctors who introduce themselves as "Dr. ___" - and for the first time, I've had one who's done it the other way around! Result!

It gets better!

My previous doctor had told me that I would need surgery. I don't want surgery, so I've been tolerating the pain and trying to combat it with visualisation (it's nothing dangerous, just a benign lump that is unfortunately in a spot that causes a lot of pressure and discomfort). Unfortunately, I haven't been very successful with the visualisation. So, I went to this new doctor to talk about surgery

Anyway, he said, "Before we go into surgery, there are these new tablets that are very effective for the pain if you would like to try that instead". I took them, not expecting much, thinking I'll have to be back in a couple of weeks to talk about surgery again - and I just took one a few hours ago, and the pain is about 95% reduced! It's completely bearable now - maybe it will even get better with the next dose!

So, all in all, very happy with this new doctor
