if it's any comfort, i can tell you that you're not alone. in fact, you're better off than a whole bunch of people i know. if you are debt-free, if you're healthy, if noone is chasing you etc etc you're doing fine (or not as bad as you might).
the thing is, you can wary all you want it won't make the situation better. i was in a situation similar to yours in very recent past (only i'm way older than you with nothing to show for it) and the way i handled it was to send job applications, tried this and that and nothing worked, but i was aware that even if i become homeless, with no family and friends etc. so what? whattayagonnado? so i did all those things with as much emotional investment as if i was washing dishes, watching tv or any other activity you really don't pay attention to. gradually situation became better. i'm not yet where i would actually want to be, but i'm not chasing it either. if it comes - it comes. if not, who cares. i don't have much to lose so i have not so much to wary about, which means it can only get better.
this kind of attitude requires a certain level of awareness and maturity, but if you think logically, the situation is like it is, so in the end it's you choice if you are going to go through this experience feeling bad and depressed or relaxed and at ease because you can not do much about your situation right now, so why not feel good if the results are the same?

Number 1 :: Universe doesn't understand your words. Infact its not even listening to what you are verbalizing. All Universe cares about and understands is your TRUE feelings, no matter good or bad.
So considering the fact that your words are not audible to the universe, how can we convey to the universe what we want? Simple, convey the feeling you will be experiencing once you get that money. For universe the word money is simply a combination of vibrations produced my human beings. Its just meaningless.
well, are we sure about this? i'm not. you know when people first hear about LOA and they want to test it so they try to manifest small, meaningless things just to see if it works? say, it's seeing an unusual car in unusual color. i don't think that they feel anything special about seeing a pink datsun or believe that their life will be better after it manifests, yet usually the pink datsun pops up from somewhere and often it manifests very fast. ok, most people probably don't say it out loud but the thoughts that initiate these manifestations are essentially mental talk to self/universe/whatever. i manifested a grey mercedes the other day, and not just any gray mercedes, but exact model, color and all the jazz that i had in my mind. (i didn't buy it or anything, i just thought of it and it came)
Its getting complicated, isn't it?
Now the irony is there is this confusion here. Whether or not money will make you happy. Confusion is the biggest guarantee of not not getting what you want. Confusion = No Alignment. And that is why its easier to attract negative. Because negativity has lesser confusions. 
You've made a few brilliant points here. We need to invest some more brains into it.
But one this I believe is, if you are able to EMULATE the feeling, then that is the fastest way to manifest your desires. And to EMULATE something you must know what you are doing and WHY...
of course, confusion is yet another obstacle, but then again, often there's no confusion. as far as money, i personally have enough life experience to know what it's like to have it and all the other implications. but that was not my point here. if we talk about deliberate creation then i should be able to imagine whatever and get exactly that, be it 7 tons of potato peelers or a bulgarian guy dressed as mexican or whatever... my whole point is that we don't have all the information on how these things work. sometimes we get the essence of what we really want, sometimes literally what we asked for, even if we really wanted something else. results are still pretty random to be able to say we've figured it out. i think that Abraham's teachings are a good start, but somehow nobody has managed to use this mechanism consistently. and to me that is the goal, to be able to say what i'm going to manifest, how much of it and when and succeed every time. then i'll consider the secret totally revealed.

i don't quite agree with this theory and here is why:
1) why is it so that in order to attract money we are supposed to figure out why we want it, how we're going to feel once we get the stuff we'll be able to afford when we get the money, etc etc. but we attract the lack of money (or most other negative stuff) - no questions asked. it comes directly as we fear it and not because it's some indirect feeling that might lay in our subconsciousness. if you focus on lack of money, you'll get the lack of money, not the final unpleasant situation but with all your money still in your pocket.
2) if this theory were true, then all the talk about deliberate creation doesn't hold water. if i want money, for whatever reason, then give me the damn money, even if it's a pile of worthless, inflated paper, like italian Lire were or similar. i asked for the money and not some abstract thing. if i'm still not happy when i get it, i'll deal with it then.
speaking of which, i became aware of this phenomenon long time ago. i manifested some things that were not like i imagined them, but they were exact things i asked for. being aware that i got what i asked for, i was grateful (and still am to this day) for these things as if they fulfilled all the things i was imagining when i was making the wish.
