I agree! On another note, he might have just seen the money as part of your generosity in the relationship too, and didn't really have any intention of paying anything back. Almost like when you buy your boyfriend gifts during the relationship or something. Part of me feels like he was offended you were "asking" for something back that you gave to him during the relationship (not trying to defend how he acted, that's just the feeling I got from it).
But like the others have said you WILL get it back, so think of it this way - it was really good karma that you helped someone out during his time of need when you truly cared about him. What's wrong with that? It showed what kind of caring, decent person you really are. Just because he won't pay anything back in a monetary amount it doesn't mean that he truly deep down doesn't appreciate what you did for him or that you weren't a good person for doing so.
