Meditation
« on: September 20, 2011, 12:04:58 AM »
I've been trying to get more into meditation, partly because I know it's more effective for setting intentions and visualizations if you are in alpha or theta state, but also as a way to "come down" at the end of the day to aid in centering myself, sleep, etc.

My issue is I have a hard time quieting my mind so that I can effectively meditate and get into these states.  I have tried guided meditations and while they do get me to a relaxed state, I don't believe I am achieving the state I need to.  My mind tends to wander while listening and I have to tell myself to focus.

Is this something that gets easier with practice or is there something I could be doing to aid in this?

Hi irishgirl69,

Only thing I can say is stop trying to quieten your mind. Let the emotions flow freely. Let it go with every effortless breath you release and then start counting backwards.

What is happening is this. Once you let the emotions flow the negative energy drains out. Since you are releasing these negative thoughts and chaos with every breath, you start to relax. Once you start counting backwards say from 200, you are bringing all your focus onto the numbers and as you count backward, every thought converges to each decreasing number. You begin to relax, but your mind is focused, you are in a sleep like state but you are not asleep.  ;)

This is the time when you set your agenda for the day and visualize. You can make yourself more energetic or go to sleep.

When I did this for first few times, I could not visualize but what I felt was peace. And well LOA works when you are at peace with yourself. Ain't it?

Please let us know what you think or how it works out for you.

Best Regards,
Shrikanya

This is something that you get better at with practice.
You could try concentrating on your breathing, or another traditional way is to repeat a mantra (a phrase) over and over.

Tibetans often use the Mantra “ Om Mani Padme Hum”. The “Hum” is pronounced more like “hoong”.
Each of the six syllables have different meanings, and together they invoke compassion and love.

You could also try concentrating on a candle flame – another traditional method.

We are lucky that our technology allows us to use recordings of guided meditations. You could record your own. Doing your own allows you to tailor it to your needs. If you find your mind wandering just bring your attention back to what you were concentrating on. Don't be angry or frustrated, everyone has some problems to start with.
Be gentle on yourself.

The ultimate in meditation is to stop all thoughts. This is very difficult and takes a lot of practice. The good news is that you don't need to do that to use the law of attraction. Just get used to concentrating on your visualisations for a few minutes.

And don't worry - if you can visualise for a couple of minutes you are meditating and you can consciously use the law of attraction.

Peace and love,
Edge.

Hi Irish,

I agree with the other posts. You cannot calm your mind through effort.  I often visualize that my thoughts are like a glass of water that has been rapidly stirred.  The water will gradually settle down if I just leave it alone.

I also find it helpful to remind myself that I am always silent.  I am not the one jabbering in my head.  I am the one that is listening.

Cheers,

With meditation its not about trying to quiet the mind you just happen to naturally by focusing on something purposely. Like a flame or the air conditioner noise, or white noise, or repeating a mantra, or a specific image or feeling or most ocmmonly your breathing.

If you get a thought that distracts, just re focus to what you were focusing on, it is so simple.

with practice it gets easier to re focus. and those distracting thoughst get less frequent while meditating.

Thank you so much for all of the suggestions.  I am happy to hear that I shouldn't try to ignore the thoughts or quiet my mind and that it will get easier with time.  I will definitely try some of these suggestions.  Thank you!

How long do you meditate? My personal experience is that if you sit for at least an hour, then after 15-20 mins, the mind runs out of thoughts, IF you do not indulge. What I mean is that if thoughts come, let them come. Don't respond to the questions, don't extend the story that is being created...and you will realise that after 20-30 mins, you are reaching a state of thoughtlessness....seems also like sleepy state.
Earlier I used to sit for half an hour and used to be very distracted. Extending it to an hour helped me a lot.

Today as I was meditating, I experienced that to love and feel love, space and time are not important. I was able to send love and feel the love for someone without the physical presence. And I just loved that experience. It was very very liberating. It happened towards the end of my one hour session and lasted only a minute or so. But it was worth the one hour session. :)

Another that helps is the timing. I try to do this in the morning as the mind is fresh and few thoughts are there. Secondly, before going to sleep, I use some technique to release thoughts e.g, eft, ho'oponopono. See what helps you release thoughts and use that just before going to sleep. No need to meditate after that. Just go to sleep. This also has helped me a lot :)

Let us know about your experience again!

Lots of love!

Edge is right, this mantra is very very helpful. When I was attracting Patrick back, I meditated twice a day while listening to these chants. And I still do  :)
